Me Eat Meat and Veggie

Paleo Diet Progression

And so it begins…. a new chapter…. a new journey…. Last week was an eye-opening experience for my family and I and because of this and after much thought I am taking my family on a journey to eat like the cave men did. In other words we are adapting to the lifestyle of the Paleo diet. We are doing this for many reasons.

So you might be asking what the heck is this caveman Paleo thing? Well, in a nut shell its eating like the cavemen did, meat, nuts, fruits and veggies and NO grains, legumes, dairy, sugars, and anything refined. For us, no, it’s not about weight loss, it’s about the health of our bodies.

Why am I taking my family on this journey? Well, let me go back and I mean way back. When I was a child I was allergic to dairy, eggs, and yeast. I wouldn’t break out in a rash or hives, but my mood would drastically change. This sweet nice little girl would suddenly turn into Verunka.  My mom then started giving me allergy shots and kept me away from those foods as much as possible. Fast forward to the birth of my first daughter Joclyn. Since she was born she has been such a restless child. Her brain just never seems to stop and she has a very hard time concentrating on things. This has gone on most her life . She has continual belly aches and is always constipated or has diarrhea(something that I have struggled with my whole life).

Last week we had an appointment for Joclyn to see a psychologist and discovered that she in fact has ADD…..  She has been really struggling with school this year and having so many problems, we just need her to get some help. After doing some research I came across Dr. Osborne that explains how gluten can cause symptoms of ADD/ADHD and just about all the issues that she struggles with. This doctor also goes on to say that most the time when people are diagnosed with a food allergy especially with dairy they have a gluten intolerance. Here are a few symptoms that people can have that are sensitive to gluten:

  • Growing pains
  • Colic
  • Reflux
  • Stomach pain
  • Chronic ear infections
  • Hyperfollicular keratosis (skin bumps on the back of the arms)
  • Failure to thrive (FTT)
  • Growth stunting
  • Short stature
  • Constipation
  • Autism
  • Diarrhea
  • ADD/ADHD symptoms
  • Spontaneous nose bleeding
  • Severe allergies (hyper allergic syndrome)

I urge you to go and just listen to this video if you or anyone you know suffer from any of these symptoms.

So, maybe now you might be thinking I’m not so nuts on taking my family Paleo. You see our bodies were just not designed to eat grains and so our body rejects it and protests against the grains. I know this is totally how we were not taught on how whole grains are essential for us and how our culture currently teaches us. But our bodies do not like grains and are causing us so many illness. I urge you all to do some research on it.

Eating like a caveman might not be for everyone, but for me and my family we will eat like cavemen!

Interesting information. I am not very familiar with Paleo, so the table was pretty helpful.

Paleo makes SO much sense! Have you read, “It Starts with Food”? Amazing resource and so much information that you just can’t un-learn once you know it!

I am not a paleo perfectionist, and my weekends are typically paleo-free.. but Monday-Friday I try to be pretty strict and just feel so much better for it!

I read about the Paleo diet a while ago and it really makes sense. I try to improve our family cupboards and menu each month, with more whole foods and get back to more natural nutrition. I applaud you for taking the full leap and I hope it helps your daughter. Keep us posted!
